"Security is increased in the islands, where predators are less of a threat, giving assurance that the bird from extinction on the mainland," said Megan Willans DOC forest guards in the statement, as reported by Xinhua.
Of the 66 birds on the island, where the population of predators, mink, strictly controlled, 63 have hatched and raised there. It shows the bird has been sufficiently established to breed.
Rock wren is the only true alpine bird in New Zealand and one of the most ancient species of bird in the world. The birds originate from existing species over 80 million years ago and has a very close structural similarity with any other group of birds in the world.
Among the seven species of wren that lives in New Zealand when the man arrived, rock wren and Rifleman are two speseis which survive to this day. The spread of the bird throughout its natural habitat in the western part of the South Island are now fragmented, and the recent emergence of this show as much as 20 percent of the known local animal never appeared in the past 20 years.
Rock wren vulnerable to predatory stoats and rats. Both species prey on the eggs and child in the rock wren nest, and the mink also prey on adult rock wren in their nest. Alpine rock wren is one of the many species of native New Zealand that researchers believe could be extinct within 50 years if no measures to save them.
